Founded by Sabine Spare, a Toronto-based textile designer and artist, Spare Label aims to contribute to a carefully curated lifestyle where every object and garment tells a story. Spare Melding art and design in fresh and unexpected ways, along with employing ethical and sustainable production practices, each piece is thoughtfully made in Toronto by a person who truly loves their work.
The premier, limited edition collection, 'Igneous & Id', was inspired by rocks and the subconscious. Each piece in the collection is unlike any other. Hand-printed marbled silks and cottons showcase patterns of stone and water. Just like every person is an individual, and if you look closely every piece of rock is an individual, no two pieces in the collection are exactly the same. Biomimicry is pushed beyond aesthetics, becoming a conceptual motivation for the limited edition collection.

The former Port Carling Surf Club, a 1960’s speakeasy famous for it’s live music & penny arcade games was reincarnated in the Spring of 2015 under it’s longstanding nickname Frankies Surf Club.
Frankies is the brainchild of Toronto restaurateurs Ian McGrenaghan & Colin Tooke (Grand Electric + Electric Mud BBQ) alongside Micah Cameron (former women’s fashion director for the Hudson’s Bay Company.) When the trio decided to pool their talents together under one roof the end result became a hybrid between a super cool lakeside cocktail, coffee + juice bar and a multi-brand lifestyle boutique. Together they bring an impeccably curated selection of brands ranging from locally roasted coffee to some of the most sought after designer clothing lines in the world. All of which are carefully chosen with quality, sustainability and design aesthetic in mind.

SOUVENIR presents its inaugural contribution to this year's Toronto Design Offsite Festival, Canada's largest cultural celebration of design.
‘Pairings’ creates a visual menu of contemporary Canadian design and explores the relationships between objects, art and space. The show strategically combines pieces from four of SOUVENIR’s current contributors – Xenia Taler, Akai Ceramic Studio, Coolican & Company and Oscar Kwong - through the use colour, shape and design motifs.
Like a good meal, the pairings will consider and play with ideas of contrast, proportion and balance, working to highlight or diminish elements and details where desired. Juxtapositions and combinations will be used as a vehicle for conversation.
With the concept of collaboration as a subtheme, ceramicists Xenia Taler and Akai Ceramic Studio will debut their ongoing collaborative project, mounting their entire collection of one of a kind art objects and vessels. With collaborative projects becoming commonplace in the current design landscape, both in Canada and the rest of the world, each designer will discuss how working with fellow creatives has shaped their current trajectory and added new and unexpected variety to their existing work.
Visit the show Thursday, January 19th until Sunday, January 22nd.
Opening Night Reception - Thursday, January 19th | 6 - 9pm

SOUVENIR welcomes Toquilla, a collection of handmade home accessories created in collaboration with Canadian and Peruvian designers and artisans. From hats to baskets to plant holders, Toquilla offers a thoughtfully designed and carefully crafted range of handmade products for those looking for authentic artisanal designs with a contemporary aesthetic.
ABOUT THE TOQUILLA COLLECTION
The Toquilla collection has been brought to life in the northern Peruvian community of Catacaos – home to one of the world’s most ancient and honoured weaving communities. For centuries, these expert weavers have devoted themselves to the art of weaving intricate goods from the fibres of the toquilla, a fine palm-like grass. The collection is a fusion between modern design and time honoured tradition.
The initiative is the work of Brand[Trade], a Canadian social enterprise bringing high-end artisanal products to market with the goal of contributing to ongoing, sustainable livelihoods for global artisan communities through branding and design. The Toquilla collaboration between Canadian designers, Peruvian designers and accomplished artisans, supported by the Governments of Canada and Peru, tells the stories of the communities, and celebrates their history and traditions through contemporary design collections aimed towards the international market.
For more information on the collection and its makers, visit the Brand[Trade] website here.
H Y G G E
A Danish word that is a feeling or mood that comes taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary, every day things more meaningful, beautiful or special.
Whether it’s making coffee a verb by creating a ritual of making it then lingering over a cup to a cosy evening in with friends to the simple act of lighting a candle with every meal.
Hygge is being aware of a good moment whether it’s simple or special. Some refer to hygge as an “art of creating intimacy” (either with yourself, friends and your home). While there’s no one English word to describe hygge, several can be used to describe the idea such as coziness, charm, happiness, security, familiarity, comfort, reassurance, kinship, and simpleness.
The lovely Val from Lovefestjourney is back for her second Mama Dinner this year, centered around the concept of 'hygge' and highlighting and celebrating seasonal self care.
